Unfortunately, it incorporates popular moments/elements from its source material without fully understanding how they would translate on film, resulting in a bloated and occasionally confusing experience. Go to Full Review

While the bare bones of The Mortuary Assistant were apparent, this movie adaptation of the game is largely left cold on the slab, never getting the chance to rise from the dead and reach the same horrifying heights its source material did. Go to Full Review

All we need is a healthy mistrust of what we see and gnarly practical effects. With that realism, some nice cinematography to enhance the jump scares, and The Mimic’s memorable creature design, it’s easy to invest in the ride. Go to Full Review

I was completely on board at first, but then it lost me. It dragged on for far too long, and it wasn’t long before I had a good idea of where this was heading. The casting works well, which is certainly a redeeming factor. Go to Full Review

Eric 1h Bad acting, fell asleep wanted to leave early. See more Abagail 6h (WARNING: SPOILERS!) As a longtime fan of the video game, I went into this excited but anxious. Video game adaptations are notorious for missing the mark, with a few exceptions like The Last of Us Season 1 and Fallout. This film stayed very faithful to the source material. Just like in the game, the story follows Rebecca Owens, a recovering addict who starts a new job at River Fields Mortuary, run by her former college professor Raymond Delver. Strange occurrences begin happening at the mortuary and Rebecca soon finds herself thrust into a battle with demonic forces which are possessing the bodies she’s embalming and tormenting Rebecca with her troubled past to try to break her soul. The story stays close to the game while adding to Rebecca’s backstory. We do see some of Raymond’s secrets, but not as much as we do in the game. This film heavily focuses on Rebecca and fleshing out her character beyond what we see in the game. As for how this film handles the multiple endings in the video game, the ending of the movie combines elements of each ending from the game while omitting the last half of Endings 6 (iykyk). The set, special effects, sound effects and soundtrack were all great! The gore had my dad and I squealing as we watched! I was excited to hear tracks from the game’s soundtrack in the film! The acting was good, but I was most impressed with Willa Holland’s portrayal of Rebecca. Paul Sparks did good as Raymond. The supporting cast did well too. Overall, a fun and faithful adaptation that fans of the game will enjoy! 4 out of 5 stars! See more james 16h The movie was alright, if you have never played the game. It focuses way to much on trying to do jump scares that are in the game but missed out on some key story elements. See more BiPolar Bear 17h She just wandered around throughout the movie. No plot. No twist. No payoff. No sinister puppet master. I walked out before it ended. See more Sean 1d Loose adaptation of an amazing game. Needed more eerie elements and jump scares. Needed more actual mortician action. Cabinets werent opening randomly. Long camera pans down hallways didnt have creepy things hiding in the backgrounds. Lights should have been turning themselves off more. Less exorcist vibes and more basic fear from noises and sounds off and on screen would have added depth. Overall enjoyable and would recommend people try the game. See more Lex 1d Not having played the game yet, I’m wondering how much my opinion of the movie will change after a play through. That being said, the cast does their best with a script that seemed forced. The emotional stir meant to occur from the main character’s background struggle just doesn’t come through due to frantic cuts between scenes. Overall the flow was disjointed with an overwhelming amount of half explained lore that seems like it would be genuinely interesting to explore leaving you feeling cheated out of the best part of the story. Choosing to show the monster too often and too much causes the monster to come across as cartoonish instead of frightening. Impossible to follow and seems to backtrack storylines just to lead the viewer down another false path. It’s possible that the movie is simply a collection of cutscenes that were played in order. The tension of having to solve puzzles while being accosted by indeterminable danger seems to be what can be expected from the video game given the attempts at showing that on screen. I’ll likely revisit this review after playing through the game. See more Read all reviews
