Although the screenwriters try to inject some humour, style and swagger into the story, the presence of veteran Hollywood director Chris Columbus at the helm only confirms a sense of franchise-building, rather than delivering something truly special.

It was crap! … I love an anti-developer narrative, but it was so insubstantial. … I felt embarrassed for these actors, the way they were capering. There are so many good examples of this kind of thing done so much better; just watch one of them instead.

This film is such a gem. Agatha-Christie-meets-"A-Man-on-the-Inside." Thoroughly enjoyable! I loved the cast, the characters, the plot, the pacing, and the overall tone. It is somewhat cute (as I thought "A Man on the Inside" was), often funny, and, in the end, thought provoking without being too heavy -- a perfect Sunday afternoon film.

I hated this movie so much that I made this account just to write this review. Dame Helen Mirren and David Tennant were both phenomenal in their portrayal of condescending douchebags who love casually demeaning women, although only Tennant's character was actually intended to be an antagonist. I have so much respect for Dame Mirren and she played her character well but at the end of the day the protagonist was simply not a sympathetic character. Her friends also sucked, including the one she kept insulting. Also, why would a movie include a human trafficking plotline and then give no resolution regarding the victim? Did Chris Columbus or the author think we were just going to forget about the guy who was exploited and pushed into desperate circumstances while trying to support his dying mother? What was that about? You will love this movie if you love shallow, unsympathetic "quirky" characters or if you hate meaningful conflict resolution.

I love the books for their wholesome humor and easy, engaging pace, but the movie is a complete letdown. Every attempt to change the original story backfires horribly. It's hands down the worst Netflix adaptation to date that i have seen.

As a fan of the book, this adaptation was way too condensed and disappointing. It would have been much better as a series where all the characters and stories could have been explored more deeply.
