What to Know

Critics Consensus

Troll doesn't rewrite the monster movie rulebooks -- but with mythology this rich and action this exciting, it doesn't have to.

Audience Says

Troll's decent visual effects aren't enough of a reason to sit through its predictable story, cheesy dialogue, and uneven acting.

“Troll” succeeds by getting back to basics. Like way, way back — all the way to the Old Norse. Go to Full Review

While light on narrative, it’s when director Roar Uthaug embraces the film's monster that Troll reveals its magic. Go to Full Review

Troll plays its premise too seriously to be any fun and it lacks any socio-critical muster to be an effective disaster film. Go to Full Review

That often dismissed and maligned word “fun” defines “Troll” in a nutshell. It’s an eye-popping genre flick that delivers exactly what you expect from it. Nothing more; nothing less. Go to Full Review

Par H @Parhwy 4d Troll (2022) 101-minute-long Norwegian action/fantasy film I saw on Netflix in June 2026. Punching well above its budgetary weight in terms of sets, locations and CGI/SFX, Troll nonetheless gives a cliched viewing experience. Many story points and scenes are tropes (government/military/scientists mean and dumb; rogue insiders unite; mad man proven sane; and so on). I enjoyed the Andreas’ telling people about his novel (book) idea, it provided adequate levity. The music is obvious and persistent. Rewatch? No. Recommend? No. 5/10. See more Brady M @RT99560349 Jun 4 The shots are erratic and too quick, the story is predictable and not emotionally intelligent, and the ending was dumb and far less than satisfying. The main character comes up with a plan that fails and ends up with dozens of people dead, but she seems to feel no remorse about it in the next scene. Also, the film is weirdly anti-Christian for no apparent reason. I wouldn’t recommend it to my worst enemy, because then they would think that I like terrible movies. See more Paul S @PManRager Apr 5 It doesn't have the most intriguing or original story, but this movie was still really fun to watch. It was full of awesome scenes, likable characters, and beautiful animation for the Troll. I definitely recommend this for action, fantasy, folklore, and monster movie fans! See more Henry D @Henry_Domke Apr 3 A giant troll is a fun monster idea, and I liked that the film was made in Norway. Still, it felt paint-by-numbers. The acting was competent, but no one really stood out, and while the special effects were decent, they were not enough to make the movie feel fresh or memorable.
