George R.R. Martin's best-selling book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" is brought to the screen as HBO sinks its considerable storytelling teeth into the medieval fantasy epic. It's the depiction of two powerful families -- kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest men -- playing a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and to sit atop the Iron Throne. Martin is credited as a co-executive producer and one of the writers for the series, whose shooting locations include Northern Ireland, Malta, Croatia and Spain.

Critics Consensus

Game of Thrones' final season shortchanges the women of Westeros, sacrificing satisfying character arcs for spectacular set-pieces in its mad dash to the finish line.

There is something courageous about a television series that is brave enough to reimagine Richard III as a hero. Go to Full Review

Game of Thrones finally finished, the last episode aptly titled The Long Night and it was a terrible ending, disappointing for fans, causing a collective cringe around the globe. Go to Full Review

[This season] made choices that I just didn't understand...you have to wrap it up somehow, and this season is just full of more extremes and it just doesn't work anymore or fit in with the rest... Go to Full Review

After George RR Martin's books ended, the show's mojo seemed to follow. It may have still constituted event TV, but in retrospect that was based on the strength of the fan community and massive marketing more than the material itself. Go to Full Review

SHOCKING things happened just because they had shock value. They bore no connection to anything else that had happened before them. There was hardly any organic, believable storytelling leading up to those moments. Thus, they felt shallow. Go to Full Review

J Ricco C @RT88653216 30m A NO SPOILER REVIEW. Yeah, the ending definitely had its shortcomings... but the series itself was solid and entertaining, with the same solid characters as every season prior to this one. I am absolutely in the majority who would have liked to see a more solid ending that talented writers should have been able to put together... but even with the disappointments at the end, I would still wholeheartedly recommend watching this series... EVERY episode. See more Orange1368th T @RT63582097 May 10 shit so bad i could cry See more Mike P. @MikeisaPATRIOT May 1 Absolutely terrible. Abysmal rotten unwatchable and fucking awful. Who wrote this thing? I’m ashamed of you. You suck. This is the ending you came up with? You should be punished! Beaten severely. Such a great first of seven seasons and it ends with this? See more Stephen P @RT74476710 Apr 22 I'd heard for years how bad the ending was...... but goddamn. I could see it gradually degrading in the last two seasons, but the last two episodes of the last season are so bad that even the writers had to have known that they were complete trash. Rotten tomatoes should really add 0 stars and -5 stars as ratings, because a -5 is what this season deserves. From now when I'm considering starting any show, I'll be checking to see if these writers touched it, because if they did I will immediately know that the writers don't care about writing a compelling story, and that it isn't worth my time. See more Chaz W @Catalytic Apr 20 It's well known that the 8th season of GoT is the worst ending to a show in history. See more Mauricio C @mauricio.crz Apr 18 I completely agree with the ending. The "wheel" Daenerys always talked about breaking was, in the end, being set in motion again by her own actions. She became exactly what she once swore to destroy. That’s why her death felt necessary — not just to end the story, but to truly stop the cycle she wanted to break. As painful as it was, it made sense. In the end, she was no longer the one who could break the wheel. See more Read all reviews
