Aug 15, 2018 The Bosnian War is the setting for this well-intentioned film whose themes are tried and true, but portrayed much better elsewhere. See more Sep 17, 2011 This film was uniquely hard to watch. Hollywood would never pair such misery & despair, on the vision of children as a theme. Its more like a documentary of hardship, bleak human suffering in the utterly poor former Czech region. Also the corrupt & sadistic military surrounding the heartless & despicable remnants of the former villages made me almost stop watching after 20mins. I think thats why this film is truly awesome. Its enduring, it makes you work hard & appreciate the journey.Out of this dirt, sweat & stink filled encounters is this "little man", Vlado. He not cute and sweet the way his innocent looks might imply. He survives hand to mouth daily, in a cruel, ruthless & unforgiving world. He has not become the world he lives & survives. Its Vlado's ability to not be daunted or changed by the bleakness in every scene. He doesn't yield, not in the worst of times that are truely life or death. This kid has not been conquered by the things that weaken even adult men. He turns out to be the bravest, the smartest and driving force in this epic landscape of desolation. The first 2O mins is like watching graphic surgery, but the rest will surprise and compel you to an unexpected bold ending. Just like Vlado.Well done to the director for not being formulaic or cliche. To show such a real and gritty theme in the world, without inserting Rainbows & puppies as closure. Bravo! See more Jul 17, 2011 'Vlado' was played brilliantly by this young actor and Bob Hoskins is so underrated. See more Jan 26, 2009 could be better. good story, bad plot, bad acting. See more Dec 20, 2008 Interesting story about how not-so-good intentions can change when people get to know each other. Sort of unrealistic, and clearly not a Bosnian film. See more Jul 26, 2006 I think it meant to be much more powerful and important than it turned out, but it is a fine film. Very slow moving. It lacks charisma. Good score, nicely acted by Bob Hoskins, memorable images, nice photography. See more Read all reviews
