While out hunting, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds the grisly aftermath of a drug deal. Though he knows better, he cannot resist the cash left behind and takes it with him. The hunter becomes the hunted when a merciless killer named Chigurh (Javier Bardem) picks up his trail. The lack of respect for the body, the sheer bloody aftermath depresses me. Yes, they may handle the killing with verve and ironic tension, but this is a Coen brothers film too far.

The folksy characters typical of the Coens’ work are perfectly juxtaposed against the ruthlessness of Bardem’s incomparable performance. Both the landscape and soundscape are simultaneously barren and rich, mirroring the understated yet powerful dialogue.

Whether the Coens have made better movies is subject to opinion but there is something incontrovertible about No Country’s status as god-tier filmmaking. Repeat viewings do nothing to lessen its staggering power.

No Country for Old Men is a tense and unsettling thriller that builds suspense through silence as much as action. The characters feel authentic, the dialogue is sharp and the story explores fate, violence and morality without offering easy answers. It remains gripping from beginning to end.

This is an 'everyone dies and you're supposed to laugh' and I didn't. So. The Coen bros were my favourites growing up- swear by. I then... had to account for myself. Couldn't. Swear at. If I'm being serious, and it's a difficult thought to express... I view their work less as a completed work, more as their telling us how they've been doing, suffused with what they've been reading; aaaand. I just find the contempt a bit stifling, sorry. Oeuvre. Making crime novels into film- Dashiell Hammet (Glass Key/ Miller's Crossing), Raymond Chandler (Long Goodbye/Big Lebowski), James M Cain (Postman always.../Man who was not...) , ... Fargo, Blood Simple. Making novels ?- True Grit; No Country for Old Men. Inside Llelwyn Davis, O Brother. A serious man. Barton Fink. Trying to be funny / screwball ? comedy- and just about succeeding; Hudsucker Proxy , Raising Arizona. And failing miserably: The Ladykillers, Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading.
