What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Name of the Rose boasts fine performances, but the drama floating around its hallowed halls often feels like more work than it's worth.

The only character who comes alive at all is a sadistic inquisitor as played by Rupert Everett in a camp get-up and with his face set permanently to a pantomime snarl. Go to Full Review

The abbey politics were sufficiently juicy and I loved the long, luxurious scene of the illustrators at work, hooded figures bent over Bibles, painstakingly creating magnificent, mind-bending miniatures. Go to Full Review

[Rupert Everett's] delivery of the single word "Witchcraft!" is worthy of an acting masterclass. Go to Full Review

Judging by the results, perhaps we have to accept that The Name of the Rose belongs to that group of "unfilmable" novels and leave it alone. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

If we have come simply because of truculence, sadistic characters and sibylline people jealous of ecclesiastical power and secrets, we will be well served. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

It's a handsomely mounted production and clearly a labour of love for John Turturro, who stars as William of Baskerville and is also one of the writers and executive producers. Go to Full Review

Julia M @RT79833488 06/09/2021 Excellent cast; strong script; gripping story; skillful cinematography. Definitely worth watching if you enjoy mystery stories or have any interest in medieval history, philosophy, or religion. See more Phoebe R @RT92035168 03/15/2021 Beautiful sets and exquisite location, some very fine performances—John Turturro gave a sage, warm turn, and his novice was adorable. I appreciated the attempt to round out the character of the nameless girl from the novel, and though the backstory of Dolcino & Margerita and their daughter was interesting, there wasn't really time to successfully add another entire subplot to what is already a story with so much going on. I want to applaud the way they used real Gregorian chants in their services—sung beautifully, with just enough scruff to be believable as something other than a group of trained pros. The worst part, I thought, was the abysmal editing. Scenes ended inexplicably, awkwardly cutting to the next, always briefly muting the incidental music—the worst transitions I've ever seen or heard. See more 11/02/2020 I like it, even the updates. I know, who am I to questions Umberto Eco, but I think the updates are relevant for modern audiences; many of whom don't believe in "religion" or "sex as a sin"'; but do look for justice. I have read the book and at times got bored with the angels on a pin discussion between the prelates (like, who cares) and also saw the film, which I also enjoyed greatly. See more 07/06/2020 Excellent season! Far better than the 86 film! See more 04/24/2020 Maybe only for certain mystery-oriented tastes, but I thought this was exceptionally well done, reaffirming my sense that this new serial streaming way is the best avenue for rendering (especially complex) novels to film. Lots of great acting (the 'dog guy' is particularly fabulous - what hilariously committed and skilful acting!), and it was very sure-footed in the storytelling. See more Read all reviews
