Preacher

Critics Consensus

Preacher returns as creatively violent, bloody, and profane as ever, but it seems to be running out of steam in its final season.

Critic Reviews for Preacher Season 4

All Critics (11) | Top Critics (1)

Hopefully, Preacher will wrap up successfully, and keep on finding new ways to offend as many people as possible. But the feeling is certainly that it's time to let the show go. The end? It's arriving just in time, almost.

Preacher exists at the fringes of Golden Age television: erudite, boundary-pushing but also bloody, profane, and decidedly niche.

Whether or not Preacher will adhere precisely to Ennis's original ending remains to be seen, but there's reason enough to continue watching to find out.

Aug 5, 2019 | Full Review…

This has always been the thing with Preacher, from the source material on. It has plenty to say about humanity & faith & life, but to hear it you have to live through the juvenilia. With Season 4, though, for the first time, that does not feel worth it.

One of the things that makes Preacher so much fun is its over-the-top lunacy, and the season premiere did not disappoint.

Aug 5, 2019 | Rating: 4.0/5.0 | Full Review…

The back half of Preacher will have to pull a miracle out of the bag for this not to be remembered as a disappointment and a missed opportunity.

Aug 21, 2019 | Rating: 6/10 | Full Review…

Without a doubt, Preacher is back, and along with it, some of the most creatively and hilariously violent sequences on television.

Aug 5, 2019 | Full Review…

Had the showrunners elected to call this series by a different name it may have been a modest hit or a cult classic. Instead, AMC's Preacher is a series that just shares a title with an iconic comic book. This is not the Preacher we deserved.

Few television shows acknowledge the bitter things in life with such imaginative humor, and few characters face this kind of cynicism with the two-fisted grace of Tulip O'Hare.

Aug 14, 2019 | Full Review…

The final season is as delightfully demented as ever, with the added urgency of its finale giving it the necessary narrative momentum it always needed.

Aug 1, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Preacher Season 4 starts strong, but it can't escape the snare of mediocrity, no matter how much craziness it throws our way. And while the show is rarely subjectively bad, it continues to have issues with tone and characterizations.

Audience Reviews for Preacher: Season 4

  • Nov 04, 2019
Preacher was great Season 1 but each season after that got progressively worse. Season 4 was so bad I had to force myself to watch. I was determined to see it thru tho. The finale felt like a group of writers got stoned & wrote some crap that they & only they could possibly find amusing. One of the worst shows I have ever watched!

Don't care if it wasn't as good as the comic, don't care if it was hit or miss, loved it. Everybody in it was great. Totally absurd & ridiculous & a blast.
  • Oct 09, 2019
Seemed rushed. Lazy writing. Could have been better.
  • Oct 07, 2019
what a horrible season... way to much cassidy and way to little jesse and tulip who actually make the show work
  • Oct 06, 2019
Nice final season, though it ended too soon.
  • Oct 01, 2019
One of the best and unfortunately shortest TV show ever!
  • Oct 01, 2019
    Constantly witty and entertaining.

Preacher's final season is without question its weakest, but it fortunately has some bright snippets that recall the superior earlier ones (and source material). Of all the four seasons, this one takes the most material from the comic book, but it ultimately proves detrimental towards the quality. Much of the content taken from the book feels shoe-horned, while the previous seasons did a very commendable job of altering the book's plot elements while staying true to its nature. It ultimately ends on a similar note as the comic, but it just feels rushed and the thematic ethos just does not resonate as it should. The filmmaking and performances remain strong, but it seems like Rogen and Goldberg seemed more concerned with getting The Boys off the ground this year than giving Preacher a better conclusion.

You're gonna wanna wear your seatbelt. The cast has chemistry, wonderful writing, good acting, funny as hell!!
  • Sep 24, 2019
Has its moments but it's kind of a mess. And not the good kind. Definitely feels like writers are struggling mightily to bring closure. Violence and general bizarre nature carries the day, but story hasn't really gone anywhere. Hoping the finale makes up for it.
