Save for a few billed appearances on TV cowboy series like Gunsmoke, Brimley worked primarily in supporting roles until finally achieving star status in the 1980s via his gruff, fatherly roles in such films as The Thing (1981), Hotel New Hampshire (1984), The Natural (1984) and Cocoon (1986). On television, Wilford Brimley starred in the 1980s family dramedy Our House. In addition to his film and television work, Brimley worked for a time as the commercial spokesperson for the Quaker Oats company.

Pop Fisher
It's the right thing to do.
Bump Bailey
[after failing to catch a fly ball] I lost it in the sun.

Pop Fisher
Batting practice tomorrow, be there!
Roy Hobbs
I have been. Every day.
Pop Fisher
C'mon Hobbs, knock the cover off the ball!
Blair
You see, what we're talking about here is an organism that imitates other life forms, and imitates them perfectly. When this Thing attacked our dogs, it tried to digest them. Absorb them. And in the process, shape its own cells to imitate them. This, for instance, that's not dog. That's imitation. We got to it before it had time to finish.
Norris
Finish what?
Blair
Finish imitating these dogs.
Ben Luckett
Ben Luckett: [Stepping into the freezing cold pool] Whoa, that'll make your ol' ball sack shrivel up.
Ben Luckett
