Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Mar 9
The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

That said, the film also delights in showing blood, bones and guts, so be warned if you're not in the mood for a glut of flying viscera. Go to Full Review

Javier D @RT79843008 8h Una reverenda mamada con un guion escrito por un niño de 10 años See more Sam G. @SamG76 18h War Machine is exactly the kind of high-octane, adrenaline-fuelled ride that action and sci-fi fans have been craving. The film brilliantly blends thrilling military action with science fiction in a way that keeps you hooked from start to finish. What Works: Brilliantly Alan Ritchson is a standout. His performance as 81 carries the film with raw physicality and emotional weight, reminding us why he's one of the most compelling action stars working today. Director Patrick Hughes deserves real credit too — not just for crafting an engaging storyline, but for delivering some genuinely spectacular explosion VFX that Hollywood has honestly been lacking for decades. It's refreshing to see practical-feeling, visceral action done this well on screen again. The storyline itself is clever and engaging. The alien threat — mysterious, relentless, and seemingly unstoppable — carries strong echoes of Spielberg's War of the Worlds, which gives the film a satisfying sense of scale and dread. Where It Falls Short: That said, the film isn't without its flaws, and the biggest one is the robot's ending. If heavy explosions and .50 calibre rounds couldn't put a dent in that thing, it's genuinely hard to believe that a few rocks could finish it off. The "breathing" vulnerability feels underdeveloped and frankly unconvincing as a concept. For a machine that seemed completely invincible, the payoff felt rushed and a little too convenient. There's also a noticeable tactical oversight — the soldiers having no radio communication throughout makes little sense. In particular, 81 having no way to warn the rest of the squad when it mattered most was a frustrating plot gap that took me out of the experience. Final Verdict: Despite these gripes, War Machine is an exciting, visceral, and thoroughly entertaining film that leaves you genuinely wanting more. The cliffhanger ending does its job perfectly — I'm already waiting for War Machine 2. If you're a fan of old-school action with a sci-fi twist, this one is well worth your time. Rating: 4.5 / 5 See more Torin F @nonlinearize 1d WAR MACHINE (2026) is a taut sci-fi military action thriller that executes its straightforward survival story with commitment and consistency, delivering on its creature feature premise without frills or unnecessary excess, and making for a satisfying and explosive popcorn flick with a punch.
