Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

Nicely crafted, but still Hillerman-lite. Go to Full Review

At this point, Dark Winds is already doing variations on its own themes. But they're good themes, and interesting variations. Change can be overrated sometimes, when you're already good at what you do. Go to Full Review

As the show’s writers continue to find meaningful cases that push its characters close to the brink, this series will continue to be a defining touchstone that withstands the test of time. Go to Full Review

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been watching from the beginning or just tuning in for this season, Dark Winds is the best hidden gem TV show of 2026 so far, and it’s hard to imagine another show unseating its traditional structure and innovative story. Go to Full Review

While the fourth season of Dark Winds is taking a chance by going off the rez, seeing Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito facing big changes brings interesting context to what might be normally be considered a standard police thriller case. Go to Full Review

If old Sundance [Robert Redford] was still kicking, he’d surely approve of this new season because it’s a fitting homage to his ‘70s heyday and builds upon the gritty, rollickingly adventurous tone of that bygone era. Go to Full Review

D L @DaturaDreamer 14h I still love the characters but this season was kind of silly. I think they should stay on the Navajo reservation- the scenery and setting are beautiful. There was a scene with saguaros though which dont grow in that part of the country. Taking it to LA just doesn’t work for me. This season is a little far fetched. Plus they create drama between Chee and Bern about her being chief which is unnecessary drama and Chee acts so immaturely. See more Carol F @RT91801163 2d Dark Winds….what a treat! There is something here for everyone …a romance, cultural depth, great acting by everyone in the cast, a plot that thickens and then thins only to thicken again, a unique and spell binding setting, murders, hirred assasins, deeply engaged married couple, medicine women and the backdrop of meaning making at every stage of life of the characters. I love Dark Winds and hope it goes on and on…more seasons! See more Karl P @RT94872879 Mar 19 We have loved Dark Winds since the beginning, and look forward to watching season 4. Yes, Joe Leaphorn sometimes gets in his own way, and has to be bailed out by those around him. But the story of how he and deputy Jimmy Chee get to the bottom of the bizarre crimes they investigate is always compelling and heartfelt. See more DM Z. @blastoffgirl Mar 8 One of the best shows ever made for streaming - binge watched all 4 seasons (half way through four) like it was quarantine again, somewhat glad I resisted watching because it’s an amazing series to binge! The entire series is perfection, the characters are fascinating and the fact they are Native American and it takes place on the Navajo Reservation is almost secondary (except for the scenery and locations which are stunning) - it’s the story and the characters that draw you in, the beauty of the culture knows no bounds, but it’s Joe Leaphorn that ties it all together, that and the cool 70s vibe. This is a MUCH watch - each season you’ll laugh, cry, feel enraged, it’s truly an American story about life in the 70s, and the crazy characters with intricate stories and off the chart mysteries, crimes, love affairs, tales of revenge etc that Joe and his staff of incredible police officers encounter every day. It’s a community at the cross roads of international crime, mystery, mysticism, and Native American life and traditions that makes this series a real treasure. I just pray there is a Season five! See more Ricardo C. @Ricky08 Mar 2 It’s great to see a show from the perspective of the native American written produce and active terrifically. I absolutely love this show.
