What to Know

Critics Consensus

An anachronistic retelling of forgotten heroes, The Gray House mostly disappoints with its lackluster writing, laughable characterizations, and misrepresented history.

Though sprawling and highly detailed, “The Gray House” becomes so clunky and overrun with extraneous characters and narratives that the women at its center nearly get lost in the chaos. Go to Full Review

A great historical story gets wasted in this endurance test for viewers. Go to Full Review

“The Gray House” isn’t all bad, and its intentions are good, but it’s dramatically predictable and at eight episodes, some over an hour, goes on much, much longer than it needs to. Go to Full Review

The Gray House does succeed at capturing some of the ugly and brutal realities of systemic slavery in the South at the close of the antebellum era and throughout the Civil War. Go to Full Review

The Gray House is surprisingly engaging for such a sprawling historical drama, aided mostly by a good mix of characters and a strong lead performance by Daisy Head. Go to Full Review

Duller than an old butter knife (musket duels notwithstanding). Sadly, turning point history comes off wishy-washy on The Gray House. Go to Full Review

Celia C. @celiac 3d Brilliant depiction of the truths of our Civil War. Although light on the realities of slavery. See more Jessica S. @RT69470394 6d Difficult at times, but truly outstanding. The Gray House delivers powerful performances, stunning cinematography, and an eye-opening story I had never heard before. I had no idea there was an entire spy network in the South during the Civil War—led by truly remarkable women. It’s an empowering, beautifully told story that highlights their courage and impact, all captured perfectly over eight episodes. See more Jake C. @RT47770776 Mar 14 I absolutely loved it! As a Richmonder, it incorporates many of the legendary stories of Richmond during the Civil War which was at the center of a war the tore the community and our country apart. This series takes you inside places that have lost to history The Van Lew House, The Exchange Hotel, Libbie Prison, etc. You practically get to walk the very halls with this outstanding cast. The story lines are deep and complex making it an even better watch the second time through. It’s TURN meets Mercy Street with a dash of both Bridgerton and Deadwood. It’s a bit over the top at the start but settles in nicely. Paul Anderson’s Stokely character might be the most despicable bad guy character on any show in years. And Kieth David’s appearance is Emmy worthy! There’s a LOT of death a fowl language but that’s what gives it its grit and allows the chaos and destruction of the time shine through. And the original soundtrack! Terrific new songs from Willie Nelson, Lainey Wilson & Shania Twain! See more nan R @RT54258023 Mar 14 Great storytelling & acting. See more Kalyssa R @RT03010853 Mar 12 Fantastic narrative and storytelling with compelling characters. While a historical fiction, it shines an important and captivating light on the importance of the freedom of all humankind, the battles fought to establish precedence for such rights, and our union. Enthralling and talented actors alongside above average writing make this television series one you cannot miss. Great storytelling, amazing characters and actors, and incredible production value. I disagree with the reviews stating the pacing is slow. It may not be a fast paced action, but it is a captivating narrative- I am thankful the series has nearly hour long episodes and am hopeful for another season. A riveting American Period piece (a rare gem!) and a must watch by all accounts! See more William N @William125 Mar 11 This is straight up garbage. Even though this is a period piece which gives you more opportunities for great story telling, the story telling here is atrocious. The acting reminds me of a high school play with amateur actors who either overact or give the most uninspired performance. The production values are mediocre at best but in the end this is just a boring spectacle. See more Read all reviews
