Critics Consensus

Stylistically bold and beautifully acted from top to bottom, Adolescence is a masterclass in televisual storytelling and a searing viewing experience that scars.

It's the exploration of toxic incel culture and its effect on young men that makes the series a relevant, spellbinding exploration of a pressing moment in modern society. Go to Full Review

[Adolescence] is an authentic, searing portrayal of the hardships of growing up in an age when the digital world and social media don’t just overshadow the real but manipulate and maul it in disquieting ways. Go to Full Review

Matthew Lewis’ one-shot cinematography is, of course, stunning, as is the writing and Graham and Owen Cooper’s performances. But for me, the real knockout of this uncomfortably knotty show ... is Erin Doherty Go to Full Review

#NotAllMen responses aside, the drama speaks directly to kids like Jamie and dads like Eddie, understanding that the conversation on women’s safety remains unactionable if boys and men stay on the sidelines. Go to Full Review

“Adolescence” made me feel the inner lives of the main characters... the depth of their love, disappointment, and quiet despair, tinged with hope, is inescapable and with me still – haunting me. Go to Full Review

Digital N. @prosilire 4d Masterpiece. Breathtaking in its honesty and in its technical execution. Brilliant actors. Brilliant filmmakers. See more Diogo S @RT14806384 Mar 15 Adolescence is great at everything it aims to do. The extremely realistic confrontation of a parent's worst nightmare that could never end on a good note. The single-take episodes make this what I believe to be an incredibly difficult technical marvel of cinematography, and it is done flawlessly. The acting is out of this world and the writing is extremely realistic. All of these aspects make this one incredible show that clearly deserved its eight Emmy awards. The first episode of this show pulls you in amazingly well, although I can understand comments about the remaining episodes being a slow burner. I do not agree, however, that the single-take technique is used to burn time, as it is noticeably coordinated and serves its purpose of either building up tension, showing how the world reacts to the events around the main characters, as well as lingering with them, making us watch reactions and expressions that say more than words ever could. Definitely worth a watch. See more Rosie D. @Rosieeeee Mar 9 A solid 10 for the third episode! It took me straight back to the Prime Suspect days. While most American procedurals follow a certain template, this one stands apart. Unlike the over-engineered twists in All Her Fault, the raw performances, that incredible long take, and the naturalistic dialogue make it feel terrifyingly real. It’s absolutely suffocating in the best way possible. It leaves you wondering what can we even do anymore to help the younger generation grow up in this world? See more Peter C. @peterc22 Feb 15 Story and acting is good, captured the potentially heartbreaking role parents play in children’s lives. Overall, a bit too slowly developing. See more JOHN T. @jt1anglais Feb 5 Outstanding, an uncomfortable but necessary must watch. The show is a gripping tour-de-force with superb performances, script, pacing, cinematography, and the astonishing technical achievement of filming each entire episode as a single continuous take. Bravo to the humble and inspiring Stephen Graham for realizing his vision so immaculately, and capturing the heartbreaking realization of a father who comes to understand that he doesn't truly know his own son, highlighting the pressures of modern adolescence. See more Dante R. @DanteTruth Feb 2 Average Netflix work, hey we have an idea but we are going to draggggggggggggg it out and fill it with useless, pointless dialogues. Yes, one shot is cool, but it does not work. I mean, it worked in Birdman or God of War, but not here. Again, an average Netflix show; the first episode is compelling, but the later episodes are 2008. See more Read all reviews
