Based on John le Carré's novel of the same name, "The Night Manager" is a crime drama following the work of former British soldier Jonathan Pine. Hotel night porter Pine is contacted by an intelligence operative who asks for his assistance to spy on international businessman Richard Roper. The entrepreneur is believed to have forged a criminal alliance between the secret arms trade and the intelligence community, prompting the need for surveillance. Pine attempts to infiltrate Roper's inner circle by becoming a felon himself, while keeping his mission a secret from his hotel colleagues and girlfriend.

Critics Consensus

Marking a belated but welcome return for Tom Hiddleston's tortured spy, The Night Manager's second season is a glamorous and haunted continuation that only gets better as it goes.

It hits all the right beats, from knotty departmental drama to basic cable erotica, but it does so without much friction or sense of fun. Go to Full Review

The Night Manager season two is a show of two halves, cleaved by a big twist at the end of the third episode which changes the energy of the series. If you find the first few chapters a little dulled, just wait until that reveal. Go to Full Review

The spy game heats up with Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman back in action and a new villain (Diego Calva) to spark political and sexual intrigue. That three-way dance with Hiddleston, Calva and Camila Morrone generates enough sizzle to singe your screen Go to Full Review

At its best, this sequel series, created by original show runner David Farr, maintains a level of pleasurable dread as Pine struggles just as fiercely as Simon Williams to hide his true identity. Go to Full Review

Season two is much more of a generic thriller than its predecessor. Also -- perhaps he was like this before, but I don’t remember it -- Tom Hiddleston’s character Jonathan Pine is pretty unappealing. Go to Full Review

It is another six episodes of superb performances, meticulous spycraft, a densely packed plot, and a lot of double-crosses. But and I say this with genuine respect for the series as a piece of television craft, it is also a bit of a slog. Go to Full Review

marnie M @RT37433177 5d It would've have been 5 stars until the stupid last episode with plane switch. Soooooo dumb!! What a disappointment. They could've come up with something more creative then a total replay of the first episode of the obvious. Really bad. Ruined the whole series for me! See more Arthur Z @Arthur287 6d Even though the season seemed mostly a repeat of season 1, I enjoyed it, until the last episode. Very much a James Bond like plot that was not boring. As many have said the season ending was very poor and dissatisfying. Written to simply set up for a 3rd season. Feeling like I wasted 6 hours on season 2. I will not be watching season 3. See more Andi C @RT75205190 Mar 25 Such a disappointment to the first series. From the get go that took off like a train ride speeding up to the finale, the places, the people, the thriller quality, the beauty of the characters. I am only on episode four and I don't know why we have to have Roper still in what about a new story and new people. The first series was packed with seriously great actors and locations, that gave it calibre. It's like hoping for Harry Potter and getting the Twighlight series. This unassuming beauty he had in series 1, he now looks gaunt and like he needs to eat something. HIs blonde hair is suddenly dark. I miss Olivia, and badies like Roper, who have cojones. And suddenly the other MI6 guy who walked around in an anorak in season one, owns a huge gorgeous rich man's house in Sussex? And all the spies meet there for birthday parties? I am missing the cloak and dagger (un)believable element of season 1. Let's hope it improves, I watching it through for old times sake. See more Al A @RT36830200 Mar 19 Super disappointing sequel to Season One. Weak characters, weak writing, weak plot. Worst of all Season Two turns out to be just a set up for Season Three. See more Constantine D @RT36375607 Mar 19 It is undoubtedly among the best spy movies ever made. See more Allan H @RT89558755 Mar 18 The actors may get too old to play their parts if they keep inventing ways to keep the show rolling. I noticed some page-turner authors doing this, planting the next book at the end of the one I'm reading, cheapening any essence of artistic intent. A disappointment. But it is keeping with the times, the present pursuit of god knows what. See more Read all reviews
